At the beginning of Advent this year, I read a devotion by Kate Bowler in which she described hope as “grittier.” Gritty hope. I like that.
Hope is not the expectation of pretty packages under the tree. Hope is something “grittier.” It is the expectation of a savior who will be born in a manger, who grows up under threat, and who forgives the worst in us. And, above all else, always, always loves.
When the world is dark, gritty hope lights a candle.
On Christmas Eve churches across Georgia will raise their candles into the air in holy, gritty hope. We will raise our candles into the air as testimony that darkness will not overcome the light. We will raise our candles in the air – perhaps to light the way of hope, peace, joy and love not only for others, but for ourselves.
Thank you to the Methodist churches and related institutions throughout Georgia for the ministry you do and the light you offer. You embody gritty hope for the world as you share the love of Christ.
It is a gift for Georgia United Methodist Foundation to be in ministry with you. Thank you for that privilege and continue to let your lights shine! We hope to hear from you in 2026.
Our purpose is your mission, and your mission truly lights up this world.
